The Stereograph Collection housed by the Tennessee State Library and Archives consists of 128 stereographs ranging in date from 1866 to 1917. Around 70 of these images feature scenes from Tennessee, including Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga and The Hermitage in Nashville. The remainder of the stereographs are images taken from in countries such as Egypt, Switzerland, France, and Mexico. Many of the stereographs have descriptive text printed on the back which provides further historical information.

Stereographs are two nearly identical photographs mounted side-by-side to produce the illusion of a three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. In the mid-to-late 19th century, stereographs were a commercial success and collecting them became a popular pastime among the middle class. Many prominent 19th and 20th American photographers produced significant amounts of work in stereographs. This collection includes work from such artists as Benjamin W. Kilburn, Carl Giers, and William Herman Rau.
