This digital collection consists of portions of Bernhardt Wall’s Following Andrew Jackson, a limited edition pictorial biography containing etchings of scenes from Jackson’s life. Given the historical focus of many of Wall’s subjects and scenery, in addition to his meticulous artistic process, Wall’s work is considered by many to be a unique art form of historical documentation. The images displayed were chosen for the subject matter represented, as well as their Tennessee connections.

In addition to this volume, the Bernhardt Wall (1872-1956) Collection, ca. 1914-1953, contains biographies of Mark Twain, Sam Houston, and Andrew Jackson. This collection also consists of correspondence, materials dealing with a variety of Wall's etchings, and production and placement of those works. There are twelve bound volumes of material in the collection, along with fifty-two letters to Mary Daniel (Mrs. John Trotwood) Moore, State Librarian and Archivist, 1929-1949. In particular, the collection offers one bound volume of correspondence written during the course of creating the biography of Andrew Jackson (1937) and six bound volumes of material pertaining to the biography of Sam Houston (1935). There is also one volume of material pertaining to Wall’s development of a pictorial biography of Stephen Fuller Austin (1935-1936). Some of the correspondence offers a unique glimpse at the artist’s creative odyssey, both personally and professionally. Each one of the letters to Mrs. Moore contains an image sketched by Wall.
