Historical Note |
Albion Winegar Tourgee championed the civil rights of blacks in the Reconstruction South. He used his position as judge and his training as a writer to advance radical Reconstruction policy and Negro rights. He supported political, legal and economic reform in the face of racial conflict and Ku Klux Klan violence. His crowning literary achievements were his two Reconstruction novels of social criticism, A Fool's Errand and Bricks Without Straw. |
