This letter is from Decatur G. Chapin, a white officer of the 55th United States Colored Troops. Chapin was originally a private with the 12th regiment, Illinois Inf., and by mid-1864 served a dual role with the Tennessee Freedmen, Enrolled Militia, a home guard militia organized by the state of Tennessee. He left the USCT in become Col. of the 1st Tennessee Freedman, Enrolled Militia. This letter was written from headquarters at Memphis to his father and reports of his new position. |
