Harper's Weekly from April 26, 1862 showing Gen. Henry Halleck in field |
Description |
Front page of Harper's Weekly showing Maj. Gen. Halleck, "Old Brains" as he was called. Though Gen. Halleck is shown "In the Field" he almost never was, being strictly President Lincoln's army chief of staff in overall command from offices in Washington, D.C. Halleck was relieved of this position as the star of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, whom Halleck despised and consistently sought to undermine, rose in the West. |
