Pvt. Samuel Cantrell , Co. C, 23rd Tenn. Inf., CSA is pictured holding two weapons, a Colt Navy revolver and first or second model Smith & Wesson. He enlisted in July 1861, was promoted to corporal in September 1863, and served until the end of the war. Cantrell was hospitalized for chronic diarrhea in 1864 and captured at Hatchers Run on April 2, 1865. He took the oath of allegiance in Richmond. The original image is from the 1860s. The celluloid button portrait was likely created after he died in 1903. |
