Letter written by Frank (Benjamin Franklin) McCutchen to his father during the war. In the letter, McCutchen tells his father of his illness with typhoid-pneumonia. Due to his poor health, McCutchen paid for a replacement to fulfill his service in the military. He writes, "I have squared up with my substitute $1500. He makes a good soldier. I don't believe I will ever be able to stand the army again." McCutchen was a Private in Company I, 6th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, C. S. A.. |
