William Henry Palmer with his Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) medallion. Palmer was born November 11, 1842, in Holmes County, Ohio. His family moved to Defiance County, Ohio, around 1850. Palmer enlisted in April 1861 and served in the 14th Ohio Vol. Reg. He saw action in the summer of 1861 in West Virginia. Palmer re-enlisted later in 1861 in the locally organized 68th Ohio Vol. Reg. He served as a sergeant initially. Palmer fought with the 68th at Fort Donelson in Feb. 1862. Grant in the Siege of Vicksburg. Palmer was wounded near Jackson, Mississippi. He served under Sherman in the "March to the Sea." Palmer ended his service in North Carolina in May 1865. He returned to Ohio and died at age 89 on Jan. 16, 1931. |
