Historical note |
The Battle of Antietam, or Sharpsburg, was fought on September 17, 1862. The battle cost nearly 23,000 casualties and resulted in the end of Robert E. Lee's proposed invasion of Maryland. Brigadier General William Starke, a Virginian, was assigned the 2nd Louisiana Brigade. He and many of his men died at Antietam. Alexander Gardner was a Scotsman famous for his photographs of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. |
