Historical note |
Sterling "Old Pap" Price, born in Virginia in 1809, served in the Mormon War of Missouri and the Mexican-American War. Commissioned a major general by the Confederacy in 1862, he participated in several battles in the Western Theater, mostly in Missouri and Arkansas. He led a daring raid from Arkansas into Missouri in 1864 but was beaten back and forced to retreat to Texas. Price was the leader of the failed Confederate colony in Carlota, Veracruz. He died of cholera in 1867. |
