Historical note |
Simon Bolivar Buckner of Kentucky served in the Mexican-American War and taught infantry tactics at West Point. During the Civil War he accepted a Confederate commission after Kentucky could no longer maintain neutrality. He served at Fort Donelson and in General Bragg's abortive invasion of Kentucky. Buckner saw action at Perryville, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. In 1887 he successfully ran for Governor of Kentucky. In 1896 he ran unsuccessfully for president on the National Democratic Party ticket. |
