Small document serving as a military pass allowing Ira Morey, Hannah Morey, two little children, and one son to pass through the Union lines to Louisville, Kentucky, and return within three days. The pass was issued by Brig. Gen. R.S. Granger in Nashville, Tennessee. |
Historical note |
Ira Morey served as a Presbyterian minister in several states before arriving in Tennessee in 1849. In 1856, he accepted a position with the Abbe Institute, a school for young ladies in Lebanon, Tenn. In 1858, Rev. Morey moved his family to Franklin, Tennessee. In 1865, Hannah Herrick Morey, Ira's wife, made a futile attempt to obtain the release of their son, James Marsh Morey, from the Union prison on Hart's Island, New York. |
