Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr. was captured during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He served as a second lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. His B-17G had bombed the aircraft plant in Oschersleben and was headed back to England when he was shot down and captured as a POW. One man in his crew, Lester L. Kunz, was killed by a 20mm cannon round from a FW-190 fighter. |
