Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr. was shot down during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He served as a second lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. His B-17G had bombed the aircraft plant in Oschersleben and was headed back to England when he was shot down on May 30, 1944, and later captured as a POW. Men who were kept as POWs often suffered from depression during their internment. This was referred to as "barbed wire disease." |
