Time marches on |
Description |
This page in Mitchener's POW diary from World War II shows calendar images, each with a particular date enlarged and circled. He has drawn images next to the calendar pages, including a picture of a track and field athlete, a soldier, a minstrel singer, and a Russian soldier, indicated with the heading"Uncle Joe." The drawings are tiny and intricate, and show a subtle use of detail and design. In the bottom right corner, the word "armistice" and a question mark can be seen. |
Historical note |
Mitchener was shot down during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany and sent to Stalag Luft III as a POW. He served as a second Lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. Life as a POW in Germany involved hunger, cold, boredom, and overcrowded conditions. The prisoners tried to pass the time by taking part in various activities at the prison, which included recreational sports or games, reading, music, and other forms of entertainment. |
