Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr. was taken prisoner during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He served as a second lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. His B-17G had bombed the aircraft plant in Oschersleben and was headed back to England when it was shot down by FW-190 fighters on May 30, 1944. One of his crewmates, Lester L. Kunz, died in the crash. Mitchener was listed as the crew's navigator. |
