Mitchener drew this image during his stay at a German POW camp. The image represents the registration process of prisoners at Dulag Luft, after which they were sent to Stalag Luft III. Eleven names, listed on license plates, are pictured. They show the others in room 5, #170. Each man's rank, state of origin, and rank are listed. The men include: W. C. Popovich, C. L. Witten, W. E. Ryder, F. J. Murphy, M. R. Greenwald, T. J. Verran, M. E. Simard, A. B. Hills, D. V. McDougall, E. J. Bianco, and C. E. Hicks. |
Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr. was shot down during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He served as a second lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. His B-17G had bombed the aircraft plant in Oschersleben and was headed back to England when it was shot down. One member of the crew, Lester L. Kunz, was killed, but Mitchener was taken into Dulag Luft for processing and then to Stalag Luft III for internment. |
