Bars, Inc.
Title |
Bars, Inc. |
Description |
This page is a poem, "Bars, Inc." written by "Coyle" and dedicated to "Ivan - POW El Grande." The poem or song is about having a bar in every room of the house. Mitchener has drawn a small picture of a bar with a sign "Home Sweet Home" next to it. The closing stanza reads"Now I'll have a piano and maybe a stove/But the bars will have to come first/A roof over my head enough food to buy/But I'll damn' well not die of thirst!" |
Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr. was shot down and captured as a POW during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. After the men were captured, they were often told, "For you, the war is over" and this served to demoralize the men. Men who were kept as POWs often suffered from depression during their internment. This was often referred to as "barbed wire disease." The men could occasionally create a brew at the camp by using raisins, prunes, and sugar. |
