Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener was shot down and captured as a POW during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He served as a second Lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. Mitchener survived the war and was; able to return home; however, he died at an early age in 1957. Mitchener's mother, Estelle Farrar Mitchener, outlived him, dying ten years later in 1967. |
