Kriege's Lament, continued
Title |
Kriege's Lament, continued |
Description |
This page is the continuation of a poem or song called "Kriege's Lament" written by Willie Munger. The poem has an a-b-a-b rhyme scheme and is seventeen stanzas long. The subject is the return of the American POWs to their mothers and families. Instead of seeing handsome young heroes, the women see weak and defeated men. Mitchener has drawn a picture of the men coming off a military ship to a crowd of welcoming mothers in America. The ship is the "S.S. Kriege's Haven." |
Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr. was shot down and captured as a POW during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He served as a second Lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. After the men were captured, they were often told, "For you, the war is over" and this served to demoralize them. Men who were kept as POWs often suffered from depression during their internment. This was referred to as "barbed wire disease." The men longed for freedom. |
