Brass |
Description |
This page features a list of signatures from the "Brass" the POWs who were military officers at Stalag Luft III along with Mitchener. The previous page includes autographs of the other men who were in the POW camp. |
Historical note |
Hardy A. Mitchener, Jr., was captured as a POW after a bombing raid in Germany during World War II; he was subsequently sent to Stalag Luft III with other Air Forces as well as men from the RAF (Royal Air Force). The men developed a deep camaraderie because of their mutual suffering. They were often depressed, cold, bored, and inadequately housed. Higher ranking officers at the camp were likely to be given fewer duties. |
