Title |
1945, January 12 - From Memel to Budapest |
Description |
This page in Mitchener's diary shows the oncoming Russian advance into Poland and Germany in January 1945. It is captioned"From Memel to Budapest" and "Uncle Joe Moves Again." The diarist has drawn a calendar with the date January 12 circled as well as a sign that reads, "To Let! Sagan Univ. Abruptly Evacuated 10,000 Rooms." His map of Eastern Europe shows Russian tanks rolling into Poland from the East. |
Historical note |
Mitchener was shot down and captured during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany. He was sent to Stalag Luft III, which was located in Zagan, Poland (at the time, a part of Germany). The men were aware of the progress of Stalin's forces through radio broadcasts, underground newspapers, and newly arrived prisoners. Stalin initiated the Red Army's winter offensive on the morning of January 12, 1945. They arrived in Silesia eight days later, thus depriving the Germans of a rich source of coal. |
