Loading hogs onto the riverboat
Title |
Loading hogs onto the riverboat |
Description |
Several men are loading hogs from a chute or gangplank onto a riverboat. A pulley hoists the chute off of the bank. A white man wearing a suit stands at center, while a woman and two children, each wearing wide-brimmed hats, watch the scene from the side. Many of the laborers are African American. A corral is pictured in the background. This photograph is very similar to ID# 33002. |
Historical note |
It was common to send hogs off to slaughter by water rather than by land. If hogs were driven overland, they would lose weight, diminishing their value at market. |
