Historical Note |
Sequoyah (circa 1760-1843) was born in an Indian village near Fort Loudon on the Tennessee River. He served in a Cherokee regiment of the U. S. Army during the Creek War (1813-1814) and later removed to Arkansas. In 1821 he perfected an alphabet suitable; to the Cherokee language and returned to the eastern Cherokee homeland where he demonstrated and taught his invention. He then returned to Arkansas in 1823 to teach his alphabet to the western Cherokees. |
