Historical Note |
Pushmataha (circa 1764-1824) was one of the most renown leaders of the Choctaw people. He grew up near Fort St. Stephens, a trading post located in present-day Alabama and acquired a leadership role early in his life. In the early 1800s, Pushmataha emerge; d as a spokesman for the Choctaws in negotiations with the U. S. government. At the outbreak of the Creek War (1813-1814), he was largely responsible for maintaining peaceful relations with the Americans while instigating attacks on the Creek Indians. |
