Tammany Hall, New York City
Title |
Tammany Hall, New York City |
Description |
A pen and ink drawing of Tammany Hall in New York City. The three-story building is located on a street corner. The inscription reads: "Tammany Hall, New York City, where Andrew Jackson attended a public dinner on February 23, 1819. Collection of New York Historical Society." |
Historical note |
Tammany Hall was the Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in controlling New York City politics from the 1790s to the 1960s. The Tammany Society was founded on May 12, 1789. By 1798, the Society's activities had grown increasingly politicized, and eventually Tammany Hall emerged as the center for Democratic-Republican Party politics in the city. The sketch shows the original building where the society met. |
