Historical note	Trench warfare was a significant factor during the first World War. Trenches possessed rudimentary construction at the beginning of the war. Eventually trenches became well-built structures consisting of sandbags, wooden sides, and duckboards. The; slightest movement above trench level brought rifle fire from enemy lines. Life in the trenches could be very grim - soldiers had small rations and sometimes were exposed to unsanitary conditions. They often experienced physical ailments such as trench
