The Caserne Damremont was occupied from September 1 , 1917 to July 11 , 1919 and commanded by General John J . "Black Jack " Pershing . General Pershing led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. He became the most celebrated American leader of the; war . Ferdinand Foch was made Marshal of France the last year of the war in 1918 . After the Spring Offensive Foch was chosen to be supreme commander of the allied armies .
