Historical note
Alsace-Lorraine was created as a territorial entity by the German Empire as a result of the Franco-Prussian War (1871) . Located in the Rhine Valley region of Eastern France , Alsace has a long history of changing hands between French and German control . The territory was reverted to France after World War I as a part of the Treaty of Versailles (1919) . Nazi Germany annexed the region in 1940 . France reasserted its authority in 1945 . Today, the territory resides under French authority .
