Battle of Belleau Wood (June 1-26 , 1918) occurred during the German Spring Offensive in 1918 , near the Marne River in France . The battle was fought between the United States Second and Third Divisions and a hodgepodge of German units . After their victory ; at Chateau-Thierry , the Second and Third Division of the United States Army moved into Belleau Wood . The Germans entrenched held out stubbornly and launched several counterattacks , all of which were duly repulsed . The Germans did not surrender until Crown
