Gas attack
Title
Gas attack
Description
Aerial photograph of a gas attack on the Western Front . The gas , released from canisters , can be seen streaming across no man's land .
Historical note
The French were the first to use gas on battlefield in World War I, employing tear gas against the Germans in August 1914 . However , on April 22 , 1915 , the Germans opened the Second Battle of Ypres with an attack on French , Canadian , and British troops using chlorine gas , marking the first use of poison gas -- that is, gas designed to kill rather than to incapacitate -- on the Western Front . Mustard gas , nicknamed HS ("hun stuff") by the British and Yperite by the French , was used for the first time in 1917 in the fighting around Ypres .Delivery mechanisms advanced from simple canisters to the insertion of gas in artillery shells . Chlorine , phosgene , and mustard gases were those most widely used . The development of effective methods of protection greatly decreased the potential for gas casualties , but the use of poison gas in war was later outlawed in the 1920s by the Geneva Protocol .
