Historical note
Ypres sustained a huge amount of damage during World War I. German bombing left the Cloth Hall and St . Martin’s Cathedral in ruins . The "Cloth Hall " was begun in the 13th century and functioned as a town hall and a covered market featuring Ypres’s key economic product , cloth . St . Martin’s Cathedral stood on the site of an earlier church dating back to 1000 A.D . and was a perfect example of Gothic style . Both were rebuilt after the war to their prewar condition and to house the Flanders Museum .
