Historical note
The Hindenburg Line was a defensive barrier created by the Germans on their Western Front . Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and Gen . Erich Ludendorff shortened their lines of defense and installed concrete pillboxes armed with machine guns to strengthen ; the line of heavily wired systems of trenches . The Hindenburg Line resisted all Allied attacks in 1917 and was not breached until late in 1918 . On September 29 , the Thirtieth Division , along with British troops , penetrated and captured the section of the
