Six unidentified soldiers occupy a former German machine-gun emplacement on the Hindenburg Line on the east bank of the St . Quentin Tunnel .
Historical note
The east bank of the St . Quentin Tunnel was demolished by British high explosive shells . Its field of fire covered the approach to the bridge over the canal . The walls were of concrete , from three to four feet thick , with three plates of steel reinforcing ; grillage , bonded at each intersection . The concrete on the top about four feet thick was blown to powder leaving the reinforcing .
