Historical note |
Mitchener was shot down during World War II after a bombing mission in Germany and sent to Stalag Luft III as a POW. He served as a second lieutenant in the 509th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. Life as an American prisoner of war in Germany involved hunger, cold, boredom, and overcrowded conditions. Stalag Luft III is known for the famous Great Escape that took place in late March 1944, in which 80 POWs attempted to escape, but Mitchener was not imprisoned at this time. |
